CHAPTER TWELVE

IT TOOK LESS than thirty seconds for Selena to fall in love with Port Serenity, Alaska. The fascinating coastal town had a rich folklore that drew tourists from all over the world. Tales of Sealena, a mysterious half-woman, half-serpent creature, rumored to protect boats at sea, had become the focal point, and the local businesses were definitely capitalizing on the mythical creature’s lure. From the large serpent statue in the center of town, to the bookstore-museum nestled among several pubs and restaurants along the coastline, the residents here knew how to bring in tourists.

“Hey, did you know they’d named their mysterious sea creature after you?” Gus said, his tone teasing.

She laughed. “It’s pronounced See-ah-lena.” She’d done her research.

“Well, you’re definitely prettier,” he said with a wink.

“Really? What tipped the scales in my favor?”

“The lack of a tail,” he said. “How on earth did Jay get approval from the coast guard to film here for free?” he asked as they got out of the van at the small air rescue station. It was one of the things she loved about acting—she got a chance to live many different lifestyles, and her research for roles had resulted in a lot of unusual skills and interests over the years.

Selena grabbed her makeup kit from the back of the van and whispered, “Apparently, he and one of the captains of the cutters had a...thing.”

Gus nodded. “Ah...” They glanced over at a nervous-looking Jay, fixing his hair in the side mirror. “Looks like maybe the thing isn’t quite over?”

“That’s what I’m thinking,” she said. “It didn’t take much convincing for him to agree to film in Alaska, and it was his idea to have the last few scenes of Alice escaping on the water with the help of search and rescue.” She saw the Wild River Search and Rescue van pull into the parking lot, and she waved. It was still hard to believe that these men and women were happy to volunteer their time and expertise to make these pivotal scenes look authentic. Life was definitely different here in Alaska, where people banded together to help and support one another with no agenda, without looking for anything in return.

So different from most of her friends in LA.

So different from Matt. Six text messages from him the night before had all gone ignored. He was staying at the Wild River Resort Hotel and he’d assumed she was staying there, too. He’d tried to lure her back with talks of couples massages at the spa and champagne breakfast in bed. He’d tried appealing to all her sensitivities, reminding her of the fun activities she’d wanted to do with him on this trip. But she saw the temptations for what they were and finally shut off her cell phone for the night. Turning it back on now, she sighed. Four new texts.

“Matt’s still trying, huh?” Gus asked, and then looked embarrassed. “Sorry, didn’t mean to look.”

She tucked the phone away as they headed toward the building. “He’s persistent.
